When to book, what actually matters, and why the yearbook photo is the least important one you will take.
If you have a rising senior, you are about to get a year that moves faster than you expect. Here is what actually matters, from someone who photographs it.
When to book
Late summer through October is the window. The light is better, the fields are still alive, and your senior is not yet buried under applications and a schedule that belongs to someone else. If you wait until spring, you are photographing a kid who is already halfway gone.
The yearbook photo is not the point
Your school will get its headshot. That image will live in a book on a shelf. It is not the picture you will want in ten years.
The one you will want is the one where they look like themselves, the posture they actually have, the half-smile you have been looking at since they were four, the person they were right before they left. That is a portrait, and it belongs on a wall, not in a folder.

Bring the things that are theirs
The truck. The jersey. The instrument. The dog. Seventeen years old is a specific person with specific obsessions, and in a decade those objects will matter more than the outfit. Especially the dog.

This is mostly for you
Seniors think senior portraits are for them. They are not. They are for the parent who is going to walk past that wall every day after the room goes quiet. I have photographed enough of these to know exactly who cries at the reveal, and it is never the senior.
What a session looks like here
